Introduction
Mulilansolo Rural Health Center (RHC) is small in size with only 19 approved beds, but a very busy
RHC. It is not uncommon to find patients lying all over the place, including the veranda of the
hospital. With the help of the Archdiocese of Freiburg/Germany, the State Baden Württemberg and our
friends from "Bridge of Friendship" in Gottmadingen/Ebringen, the solar system of the Hospital was
renewed and extended.
Solar Project
Mr. Lonnie Porter a volunteer working for our diocese, was recruited as project manager. The project
suffered some delays due to the long delivery times for the goods purchased in South Africa.
The work on the solar installation started finally in early 2001. The old solar panels were taken down
and replaced by eight 75 Watt modules, mounted on frames for better positioning and protection. The
panels are connected to a new 30 Amps regulator and the direct currency is then converted into 220
Volts AC by a Sinus 600 Watt inverter. Experience has shown, that in the long run, it is more practical
and more economic to have 220 Volts available. The loss of energy is much less, more especially in a
big building with many rooms and connections. Ordinary energy saving bulbs can be used, which are available
locally.
Twelve (12) new, heavy duty-type batteries (see pictures in the gallery below) were purchased in South
Africa and installed at the RHC. They have 2 Volts each and a capacity of roughly 500 Ampere hours (A/hrs);
thus providing the RHC with enough energy to spare. They are of the low maintenance type and can be easiliy
looked after.
All electric cables were checked and replaced or added where necessary, new switched replaced the old and
faulty ones. The new installation was tested and all components proofed to be working fine. The Hospital
is now enjoying solar lighting and has enough power to have lights burning the whole night in the emergency room
and the delivery ward. We would like to thank the Archdiocese of Freiburg, the State of Baden Württemberg and
our friends from Ebringen, Germany who made it possible for us to realize this project. Their help will go a
long way in providing better health care services to the patients of Mulilansolo Rural Health Center and indeed the
rural poor of the area.
Thank you very much for your help.
