A Cardinal for Zambia

October 26, 2010 by t.matthaei

His Grace Archbishop emeritus of Lusaka,  Medardo J. Mazombwe appointed Cardinal:

Our first Zambian Cardinal

New Cardinals

The Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI will create 24 new Cardinals on 20 November; and among them will be Most Rev. Medardo Mazombwe. This is great news for Zambia  because he will be the first native Zambian  Cardinal.

For us in Mpika Diocese, this was a double blessing as Mons. Mazombwe was appointed while in Katibunga Mission where he was directing a retreat for sisters.  It was a real blessing for us, as we had the chance to meet our first Zambian Cardinal. Your Excellency our heartfelt congratulations and be assured of our prayers as you take up this noble duty of a Defender of the Catholic Faith.

Fr. Paul Fürstenberg died

October 26, 2010 by t.matthaei

Fr. Paul, the youngest brother of our late Bishop Adolf Fürstenberg died in Iserlohn, Germany on Wednesday, 20 October 2010, aged 93 years.

The late Fr. P. Fürstenberg

The late Fr. P. Fürstenberg

Born on 28 February 1917 he entered the seminary in 1938. Because of  WWII he had to serve as a soldier first and was ordained only in 1949. He was first a vicar in Glaudau (deanary of Mageburg) in East Germany. From 1953 to 1986 he was parish priest of Gerbstedt in the deanery of Eisleben, East Germany. Large parts of the diocese of Paderborn were in East Germany and after the building of the wall, Fr. Paul remained in the GDR up to his retirment in 1986. Then returned to his Hometown Iserlohn and was made a curat to the St. Pankratius Retirement Home. In 2009 he celebrated his diamond jubilee (60 years in the priesthood). Twice he has allowed to visit his brother Bishop Adolf in Zambia. He liked the country and its people and kept contact to Mpika Diocese ever since. He was burried on Monday 25 October in Iserlohn. My God reward him abundantly. May his soul rest in peace.

Our Bishop writes from Rome

September 17, 2010 by t.matthaei

As most of you are aware I am in Rome for the seminar that has been organised by the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples (CEP) for bishops from mission territories of Africa, Asia, Oceania and South America who have been appointed from 2008 to 2010.

Bishop Chama and Pope Benedict XVI

All together we are 101 bishops and we are at the Pontifical College of St Paul the Apostle. In fact among us there is one who has not yet been consecrated. That is why someone referred to our seminar as a ‘kindergarten’! Only it is so special for we have some bishops around 72 among us who do not qualify for the kindergarten. (more…)
