LENT: A HOLY SEASON OF RENEWAL 

 

 Beloved Reverend Fathers, Religious men and 

women, Lay Faithful and the Youth.  
“Grace to you and peace from God the Father 
and the Lord Jesus Christ.” (2 Cor.1.1)  

Beloved  of  God,  the  Lenten  season  is 

here  again.  Ash  Wednesday  introduced  us  to 
this Holy season and journey of renewal.

It  is  that  time  in  our  liturgical  journey 

when  holy  Mother  Church  invites  us  to 

rededicate,  renew  our  spiritual  life.  It  is  that 
perfect  moment  and  opportunity  for 
conversion  and  positive  transformational 
change of our lives. 

We are blessed again this year because 

the  Lord  invites  and  calls  us  to  look  inward 

and focus on our community as well. It is the 
time of grace and occasion of spiritual growth 
for  us,  and  the  larger  community  of  the 
followers of Christ. 

I  personally  believe  that  Lent  invites 

you  and  I  to  make  a  difference  in  our 

relationship  with  God.  And  the  driving  force 
for  this  difference  emanates  from  the 
realization that God loved me so much that he 
gave  his  life  for  my  sake.  Reflecting  on  this 
reality, namely the power of the Cross, we are 
moved to reciprocate this love of God through 

our little, human, words and actions. 

Lenten  season  invites  us  to  intensify 

our Christian way of life and practice. I believe 
that every Christian is called to Pray, Fast and 
Give  in  his  or  her  journey  of  Faith,  but  Lent 
invites  us  to  do  a  bit  more,  going  an  extra 

mile in this endeavour.  

What is Lent for me if I can’t give up 

and  give  out  anything?  Making  a  difference 
in  my  life  entails  giving  up  attitudes,  and 
behaviours that don’t add value to my spiritual 
life. It is only in giving up and letting go that I 
leave  space  in  my  life  for  new  things  and 

graces that later on I can be able to give out 
to my brothers and sisters. 

I pray that this time of Lenten maybe a 

courageous  moment  of  grace  to  give  up 
something  in  our  lives  and  give  out  for  the

Glory  of  God.  Allow  me  to  cite  two  examples 
of how we can give out to our dear ones. 

Talking  less  on  Phone:  Technological 

advances  in  communication  have  bridged  the 
gaps  created  by  physical  distance,  mobile 

phones have brought closer our beloved ones 
who  are  far  away,  unfortunately,  we  are  far 
away  from  people  close  to  us.  At  table,  or 
when  we  are  together  as  families,  let  us  talk 
to  each  other,  rather  than  always  busy  with 
people  far  away  on  our  tablets  and  smart 

phones. Be a gift to your brother and sister in 
your home.  

Secondly, our dear ones in married life, 

give  out  something  this  Lenten  season, 
create time for your family, share a smile with 
your loved one. And wherever you are found, 

be  it  at  work  place,  home  or  wherever  you 
are,  let  those  be  moments  of  sharing  your 
gifts, talents to your brothers and sisters. 

I  wish  you  God’s  guidance  during  this 

Lenten  time,  let  the  many  fruits  of  your 
prayer,  fasting  and  almsgiving  give  highest 

honour  and  greatest  Glory  to  God  and  edify 
the  Church.  Let  us  be  a  gift  to  each  other 
during this period of grace. 

Have  a  fruitful  Lenten  season  leading 

to the Solemnity of Solemnities, Easter!

BISHOP’S PASTORAL PRIORITY, 2017 

  The bishop of Mpika, Rt. Rev. Justin Mulenga 

has  affirmed  that  among  the  six  priority 
areas  in  our  strategic  plan,  Faith  and  Self-
sustainability  (Finance  and  Investment)  wil  
be  prioritized  in  terms  of  implementation  at 
all levels this year, 2017. 

  The  bishop  wil   also  spearhead  the  bible 

family  apostolate.  He  stated  in  his  pastoral 
letter  for  Advent  and  Christmas  that 
implementation of the strategic plan in 2017 
wil   be  under  the  theme,  “Economic  self-
reliance  based  on  Faith.  “  He  has  urged  all 
Christians in the diocese and people of good 
wil  to participate in the proclamation of the 
greatness/  goodness  of  God  through  Faith- 
motivated activities.

On  28th  January,  2017,  this  lay 
organization  met  in  Nakonde  and 

ushered  in  a  new  team  to  lead  the 

organization:

  The Pastoral Coordinator wished wel  the 

new  executive  as  they  took  up  the

direction to men in the diocese. 

  The  Council  for  the  Laity  in  the  diocese 

wil   be  working  under  the  Diocesan 
Office of Marriage, Family and Life
